A splash here, a line there, maybe a background, maybe foreground ... and, in all honesty, I just don’t know. This is my style. Each canvas, board, or paper carries its own story, its own set of emotions and its own uniqueness. Like Jackson Pollock, I lay my surfaces flat on the floor, covering them with rhythmic colors of acrylic paint. Different from Pollock in that my pours become forms, not splatters, and my drips are whimsical, controlled lines.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, I moved to Alaska in 1970 and majored in art at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. In 1990 I began displaying my paintings professionally in various Alaska coffee shops, offices, and selected galleries. I have exhibited work in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Girdwood, Alaska. In 2002 a dream came true when my paintings traveled beyond Alaska’s borders for an exhibit at October Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My art can also be seen on the Internet at www.artbyvonnie.com.

Water based tempera was my first choice of paint. Now I use acrylic and acrylic latex paints. In 1993 I released three limited edition serigraphs: Oil Spill, Lip Sync and Family. In 1996 I created Simple Notes by Vonnie, a line of black and white note cards.

My art is forever changing. It has gone from Peter Max’s hard edged style, to uncontrolled Pollock drips, to Vonnie’s quick, bold, whimsical lines and forms. It may also appear dense with layers of color topped with choppy, uneven scrapes, strokes and drips. Contemporary? Abstract? Maybe it is or maybe it’s not.

What really matters to me is that you enjoy my art. To know my art is to know me. It is through my art that I find peace.
